Computerized Real Ear Measurements

When your loved one is fitted with a hearing aid, the goal is not simply to amplify sound, it is to deliver the right sounds at the right levels, calibrated precisely to their unique ear. This is exactly what Computerized Real Ear Measurements make possible. At Shreya Hearing Clinic, Real Ear Measurement is a standard part of every hearing aid fitting, because we believe every patient in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mysore, and Mangalore deserves the most accurate, personalised hearing care available.

What Is a Real Ear Measurement?

Real Ear Measurement, commonly referred to as REM, is a clinical verification procedure that measures how sound actually behaves inside a patient’s ear canal while wearing a hearing aid. A tiny, soft probe microphone is gently placed in the ear canal alongside the hearing aid. Calibrated test sounds, including speech and tones, are played through a speaker. The probe microphone then captures exactly how much amplification the hearing aid is delivering at the eardrum, in real time, in that specific ear.

The results are displayed on a computerised system used by our audiologists to make precise, data-driven adjustments to the hearing aid settings on the spot.

Why Real Ear Measurement Matters

No two ears are shaped exactly alike. Ear canals vary in size, length, and shape, and these differences have a direct impact on how a hearing aid performs. A device that works well in one ear may deliver too much or too little amplification in another, even when both patients have the same degree of hearing loss on their audiogram.

Most hearing aids come with a manufacturer’s “first fit”, an automatic setting based on average ear measurements. While convenient, this generic setting does not account for your loved one’s individual ear anatomy. Without Real Ear Measurement, an audiologist is essentially estimating how the hearing aid is performing inside the ear, not measuring it.

Computerized Real Ear Measurement eliminates that guesswork entirely. It is widely recognised as the gold standard for hearing aid fitting by leading audiology associations worldwide, including the American Academy of Audiology and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Studies consistently show that patients fitted using REM report significantly higher satisfaction with their hearing aids compared to those fitted without it.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Computerized Real Ear Measurement at Shreya Hearing Clinic is completely painless and takes only a few minutes per ear as part of the hearing aid fitting appointment. Our audiologist first checks the ear canal with an otoscope to ensure it is clear of wax or debris. A thin, soft probe tube is then gently positioned in the ear canal alongside the hearing aid. Test sounds are played, and the system measures the amplification being delivered to the eardrum in real time. Our audiologist makes precise adjustments to the hearing aid programming until the output matches the target levels prescribed specifically for your loved one’s hearing loss, ensuring natural, balanced, and comfortable sound from day one.

The Shreya Hearing Clinic Standard

At Shreya Hearing Clinic, Computerized Real Ear Measurement is not an optional extra, it is a commitment we make to every patient. Our audiologists across Bangalore and Hyderabad use calibrated REM equipment to verify that every hearing aid we fit is performing at its absolute best for that individual’s ear, lifestyle, and hearing needs.

Because the best hearing aid is not just the most advanced one, it is the one that has been verified, fine-tuned, and proven to work precisely for you.
